For Benjie: Ode to Melancholy

When the saddest poem was penned,

I thought to write the saddest of the saddest.
I wrote of the people's plea
For freedom and the cry for revolution.
I wrote of my dear,poor country
And its quest for union.
I wrote of the hurt and the lonely,
And their faces, not to mention.
But alas! With mine heart
I then did see
That the saddest of the saddest poem
Ought not to be written by intention.
It is embedded in the clandestine me-
My story.
